The President of the Republic suddenly rose from his chair. A deep furrow lined his forehead, betraying the disturbance in his thoughts. He sat down again, reached for the letter on his desk, and began to reread it with tense urgency. Whatever was written in that letter had clearly shaken him.
“No… this can’t be… this shouldn’t happen…” he muttered to himself.
Dr. Nathaniel Brooks held a PhD in Chemistry. His research had been published in prestigious international journals, and his scientific contributions were recognized and celebrated around the globe. Awards and commendations from foreign institutions decorated his office—each a testament to his relentless pursuit of knowledge.
Despite multiple lucrative offers from abroad, Dr. Brooks, a scientist of global repute, had always chosen loyalty over personal gain. A patriot at heart, he remained devoted to his homeland.
He served in the Quality Control department of a private pharmaceutical company until his international acclaim finally caught the attention of the nation’s leadership. During the country’s Independence Day Honors Ceremony, he was nominated for the Order of Excellence—a prestigious civilian award.
While Dr. Brooks was not one to seek the spotlight, he understood the symbolic importance of the honor. Accepting it was both a moral and civic duty.
The ceremony brought him into the national eye. Attendees flocked to greet him, shaking his hand with admiration. His joy doubled when the President himself engaged him in a warm conversation.
“If you’re open to it, we’d like to offer you a position worthy of your caliber,” the President whispered. “Dr. Brooks, one of our country’s top universities is in disarray. We’ve been searching for someone competent to take over its management. After meeting you today, I believe you’re exactly the person we need.”
Initially, Dr. Brooks hesitated out of humility, but the President, who also held the ceremonial role of Chancellor of Federal University, eventually persuaded him. Within days, a formal appointment letter arrived—complete with an attractive salary and benefits.
Dr. Brooks accepted the role on one condition: “Please, no political interference in my work. I want to run the university independently and reform it on my own terms.”
His request was honored, and thus began his tenure as Vice Chancellor.
Dr. Brooks was a seasoned and perceptive leader. Rather than making hasty reforms, he took time to understand the institution’s inner workings. Corrupt and idle employees were gradually reassigned or removed. Financial audits were conducted personally. Merit was rewarded, and disruptive students were either corrected or expelled.
One year later, the university had transformed into a model institution—respected, reputable, and thriving.
Two years into his tenure, admissions were strictly merit-based. No favoritism. No political pressure. The President checked in a few times, but mostly stayed hands-off, allowing Dr. Brooks full autonomy.
Then, the letter arrived.
It disturbed him so much that he immediately stood from his chair. In two years, no one had dared interfere—until now.
He called in his clerk and began dictating a carefully worded response.
Once the letter was typed, he signed it and sent it via registered mail.
Two days later, his phone rang. The caller ID flashed: “Office of the Governor.”
“Dr. Brooks,” barked the voice of the Governor’s private secretary. “What have you done?”
No greetings. Just confrontation.
“You were given a directive from the Governor. Instead of complying, you sent back a formal refusal. This is very disappointing, Vice Chancellor.”
“Perhaps you’re unaware of the policies I’ve instituted,” Dr. Brooks calmly replied.
But the secretary wasn’t interested. “When the Governor of a state gives an order, it’s to be followed. You’ve made a grave mistake by denying his request.”
The condescension was intolerable—but Dr. Brooks kept his composure. He had nothing to regret.
The Governor had demanded that two underqualified students—both having failed their entrance exams—be granted admission.
In the last two years, Dr. Brooks had poured his soul into revitalizing the university. He’d worked tirelessly to improve education standards. His faculty respected him. The campus was seeing development and growth. Academic and extracurricular activities flourished—all fueled by his dedication.
But this? This political interference shattered his resolve.
The next morning, he summoned his clerk and dictated his resignation:
“Due to personal obligations, I am unable to continue serving as Vice Chancellor. Therefore, I respectfully resign from this post.
– Dr. Nathaniel Brooks”
“No… this must not happen.” The President knew Dr. Brooks’s worth. Upon hearing of the resignation, he immediately picked up the phone.
“Dr. Brooks, I’ve just learned about the situation. I’ve torn your resignation in half. I will personally speak with the Governor. I cannot let this university fall apart. I see the dedication, the love you’ve poured into this institution. Please… continue your work without worry.”
